New England Roadtrip
Hey guys! I wanted to take a few minutes to document and reminisce on our amazing honeymoon roadtrip through New England this past summer. I’ve never traveled above New York, so I was SO excited to see all of New England. Throughout our trip we traveled through 8 states, roughly 2,000 miles, and just about 50 hours of drive time! We were away for 12 days and 11 nights, which we both agreed was the PERFECT amount of time. Enough time to see it all, but also enough time to be ready to be back home. We camped for about half the time (1. to save a lot of money & 2. we just love camping!), so we were so happy to get basically NO rain. It only really stormed on the way up and the way back… So I’m kind of convinced it’s just PA haha. Anyways, let me tell you about the details of our trip!
We started out our trip in Burlington, Vermont. I had heard so many positive things about this area so we were so excited to check it out! Unfortunately, we didn’t get to go into the town very much… but we got to check out a few breweries and went on a bike ride on THE most amazing trail! It was called the Island Line Rail Trail, and it road along the coast and railroad. One part of the trail even went out over the water and it was so dang gorgeous. The entire trail was about 14 miles long, and the pics below were from the last 2ish miles. So if you are not down with a 28 mile ride (round trip) I would definitely recommend trying to park closer to the end. We had no idea what part of the trail we wanted to see so we did about 24 miles, and let me tell you I was FEELING it after. But we made a stop at the Ben & Jerry’s factory after so that made it all better :)
Next, we traveled over to Mt Washington area, which was the part of the trip that Josh was most excited for. To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what the hype was about… but once we were traveling up the auto road I understood. It was about an 8 mile trip up to the summit (which was known for the worst, windiest weather in America) and it was STUNNING. But not going to lie it was also a little scary on those skinny, steep roads. In this area we also did an awesome zip line tour through the Bretton Woods. We kept an eye out for moose along the way, but unfortunately didn’t get to see any :(
Next up was our favorite part of the trip… MAINE. Acadia National Park to be exact :) Beautiful doesn’t even sum it up. It was sooooooo so amazing. Imagine mountains and thick woods combined with a rocky coastline. My literal version of perfection. We camped in the Blackwoods campground and it was so fun! We went on a weekend, so to be honest we were nervous about it being crowded. it was a little bit, but not as bad as we expected. We just made sure to wake up early to beat the crowds. A few of our favorite spots were Jordan’s Pond, Otter Cliffs, Cadillac Mountain, and Bass Head Lighthouse. We had lunch at the Jordan’s Pond House & the pop overs were soo good! But definitely make a reservation and prepare for it to be difficult to find a parking spot! Although, we were there on a Saturday, so I’m sure that made it worse. We also loved Bar Harbor. This area was also pretty crowded, but definitely worth it! Such a cute town!
After Acadia we headed to Portland, Maine, which again we loved. We had a friend give us quite a few food and drink recs, so we checked out a ton of fun bars. We also had some delicious lobster rolls at the Highroller, which had been recommended to us by so many people. I had never really had lobster before, but New England made me LOVE lobster rolls. No seriously, I ate like five that week. My favorite way was served warm with butter, but cold with mayo was good too! Overall, Maine was our favorite area and we can’t wait to go back to explore more sometime!
Next stop was Boston! But of course we had to make a pitstop in Salem, MA. We had lunch, did some shopping, and checked out the witch house. We were only there for a few hours, but I would love to go back in the fall! Boston was also a pretty quick one night stop… but we got to check out the Boston Commons and admire some of the beautiful architecture in Beacon Hill. We also stayed in a fancy downtown hotel, which was fun (but also pretty expensive!). Honestly, next time I would probably skip the hotel and just do a day trip, but I’m not a big city person so I may be biased.
After Boston we traveled down to Cape Cod. I promise we are almost at the end! My aunt and uncle work for a campground around the base of the Cape, so we got to stay on a campsite with an awesome lake view! We got to check out Plymouth and made a day trip out to Provincetown for a whale watch (and saw lots of whales!). We also had a very yummy seafood dinner & got to stop at the Cape Cod Potato Chip factory, so all in all it was a good few days. Then our last night was spent in Newport, RI, which was an adorable little sea town. We had dinner, did some shopping, and walked the “Mansion Walk” along the shoreline. Obviously, there were a ton of mansions along the way which were pretty fun to look at. We also stayed at the cutest bed & breakfast called the Bouchard Inn. It was a french B&B and they left the most delicious parfaits and pastries at our door in the morning, so it was awesome to have breakfast in bed for our last morning. On the way home we made a quick stop in Mystic, CT. We shopped at the Olde Mystic Village (LOVED it! So cute!) and drove around town before heading back to PA.
Whew! If you read that all the way through you’re a trooper! But seriously, New England was amazing! Maybe we were a little biased being on our honey moon and all, but there was honestly not any part of the trip that we were unhappy with! If you haven’t been there before I would definitely recommend adding it to your bucket list! I know we will be going back again. And if you go… make sure to get a lobster roll! HAPPY SUNDAY! :)
